The First Plugin You Should Install

Thanks for stopping by. If you're new here, you may want to subscribe to my RSS feed and check out some popular articles.

I recommend using WordPress to make money blogging. WP has this neat feature where other people write small programs called plugins that do a specific task on a blog. These tasks range from tracking visitors to sending follow up e-mails to first time commentors. This makes your life that much easier because someone else is doing the work for you and you don’t have to learn how to program.

So which plugin should you install first?

If you were to install no other plugins, which one should you choose? That’s a difficult question as there are several plugins I would recommend you use with any blog.

If I had to choose just one, it would be Akismet. For the uninitiated, Akismet is a smart spam filter for Wordpress. It blocks out pingbacks and comments from spammers. This plugin alone has blocked 14,341 spam comments from hitting this blog since I started using it a while back. 14,000 in a year or so… a ton of spam!

The website also shows global comment blocking stats… over 5.5 billion spam comments have been blocked. Wow.

But why not [enter your favorite plugin name here]?

I think Akismet is the most important simply because it helps you cut through all of the crap. By eliminating the garbage comments, you can interact with your real readers that are continuing the discussion on your blog. Building community is a huge step to getting your blog really popular… and of course, to start making money with it.
