Wrangler and Rodeos

Thanks for stopping by. If you're new here, you may want to subscribe to my RSS feed and check out some popular articles.

When I was twelve or thirteen my parents took me on a trip ‘out West’ to Colorado, Wyoming, Montana, and because of one seriously wrong turn, Utah. For an east Tennessean like myself, it was a great trip. What do you mean mountains look completely different here?

While we were in Wyoming we stayed in Jackson Hole. There was some sort of beer and general festival going on at the time that my Dad wanted to partake in (Way to go, Dad!). I think it was in Jackson Hole — maybe Montana — that we went to a small time rodeo.

Now that was some exciting stuff. You see where I come from there were cows in the fields, sure. My Mom grew up on a farm. But I’d never seen anything like a rodeo in person. A definite thrill.

Growing older, I used to come across rodeos and rodeo championships on TV (usually ESPN). Every time I saw it, I thought, these guys — the riders, the handlers, the clowns — are all nuts. I mean the animals they are bucking on (if that’s the correct terminology) are huge! Of course ESPN likes to do a little round up where they show all of the horrible, gut wrenching times a rider has had one land on him. No, thank you.

Right now the National Final Rodeo is priming the pumps in preparation for this year’s championship. It is being held December 4-13 in Las Vegas. You can get National Final Rodeo tickets online. As you might expect, it’s sponsored by Wrangler. I know Brett Favre and Dale Earnhardt, Jr. are “comfortable in Wrangler”, but these Rodeo guys actually wear them. I won’t be going this year, but I sure may catch some of the highlights on ESPN.
